Mental Health in the Workplace

Poor mental health is one of the biggest issues in the workplace. Each year it causes over 70 million working days to be lost.

This includes everything from the most commonly experienced symptoms of stress and anxiety, right through to more complex mental health conditions, such as depression, bipolar disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder.

A great deal of these can be avoided, if the correct measures are put in place. Things such as up skilling staff to be able to recognise signs and symptoms of mental health to promoting wellness in the workplace.

Some of the ways you can help to Improve Mental Health in the Workplace are:

Offer free screening tools/teach new skills

Many mental health issues are left untreated because employees don’t recognise the signs and symptoms others are experiencing. Therefore, it is very important having people in the business that can recognise ill mental health. This allows issues to be spotted early preventing them from becoming more severe.

Promote a work/life balance

Without a healthy work/life balance, productivity is likely to decline, and employees are more likely to burn out. Insist employees take regular vacations where they are able to unplug from the office. Don’t expect everyone to answer emails around the clock.

Promote wellness

Encourage exercise and healthy eating are simple ways to promote wellness in the workplace. This can be done through discounted gym memberships, free fruit in the workplace and access to a water cooler.

Reduce the stigma

Talking about stress management, self-care, and mental health in meetings and in email communications can reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. This allows employees to see that the employer is making an effort to address mental health at work.

Having line managers which are approachable plays a huge part in reducing the stigma around mental health. After all, if employees feel as though they have someone they can turn to when struggling with mental health issues they are more likely to open up.
